第四步：Methodology写完了再把methodology填到第一版的purpose statement中，得到第二版的purpose statement。

一般来说，你的research statement是一个a road map to the study(Creswell,2007)。基本上，在你之前写好的第一版和第二版的purpose statement的内容中已经涵盖了purpose statement所需要的主要内容。

第一步：Ｗho

找到研究对象，即某类人、组织、东西、国家、政策等。这里需要注意的是：研究对象需要具体到让读者看完你的Who以后，他可以直接找到你的研究对象去collect data。

第二步：Where

Where看上去好像是在给研究对象的地理范围做出限制，但其实不仅如此。这里的where是identify一群研究对象的意思，即Where的Who。比如，如果你研究某类组织，地理上你可以集中在北京，但找出一类组织不仅可以通过局限在某一个地区，它也可以是世界500强企业。Where主要是找到研究对象的范围或类别。

第三步：What

What是最难的部分。What指的是你的research要研究where的who的what。这一步分通常要结合着你的theoretical framework来看。等Theoretical Framework写完，我会把联接插在这儿。切记，这里尽量避免写什么effectiveness,motivation，impacting之类的话。还有一些涉及comparison(对比)，causation(因果关系),correlation(相关关系),relationships(各种关系),尽量都不要写。太难太抽象了。

第四步：When

这个最简单，就是你的research的时间范围，即when和where的who的what。

第五步：How

即用什么methodology调查when和where的who的what。要写明是qualitative还是quantiative。常用的methodology包括：case study/phenomenological study/ex post facto/deive study/ethnographic study...

第六步：把前五步确定下来的内容汇总

The purpose of this HOWis to discover the WHATof WHOof WHEREin WHEN.

举个例子：The purpose of this qualitative case studyis to examine the leadership approachesof CEOs in their first five years in this positionat publically held top-ten Fortune 500 companiesin the United Statesin 2015.

第七步：检查

注意，没有意义的词不要写像motivation,effectiveness什么的这些；另外，不要对你的purpuse statement做任何的评价或解释；最后，检查一下你的pupose statement是否合理的对应着你的problem statement.

下面是一个适合qualitative research的模板，给大家分享一下：

The purpose of this ____(narrative,phenomenological,grounded theory,ethnographic,case)study is to ___(understand/describe/develop/discover)the ___(central phenomenon of the study)for ___(who,i.e.the participants)at ___(where).At this stage in this research,the ___(central phenomenon)will be generally defined as ___(a general definition of the central concept).

这里有个地方需要注意一下：

·"understand/describe/develop/discover"四个词中,"understand experiences"适用narrative studies;"describe"适用于case studies,ethnographies,and phenomenologies;"develop or generate"适合ground theory；"discover"适用于一切methodologies。

·Central phenomenon也很好理解，从literature review中找到的key concepts中的key就是这个very central phenomenon了。
